Youth athletes will have additional fields to practice and play on — hopefully by summer 2015 — as Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood and City Council unanimously approved the master plan for the expanded Bell Memorial Park on Monday.

City council voted last year to purchase about 14 acres adjacent to the park, roughly doubling its size. The number of baseball diamonds will increase from four to five and two rectangular multipurpose fields will be added.

One of the multipurpose fields will double as a rectangular field and a baseball diamond, with its use dependent on the season.

“Using the space on the multipurpose field [as a baseball diamond] will allow us to serve [baseball] in the spring … and still give us a multipurpose field supporting lacrosse, which is a growing sport here in the city,” said Jim Cregge, Milton’s parks and recreation director.

“In the fall, there tends to be less people playing baseball, and that’s because a lot of them are playing football,” he said. “So switching to just four diamond-shaped fields will be making available two multipurpose fields so we can effectively run a football program here in support with the football program we run with the city of Alpharetta.”

The park will also include a walking trail, pavilions, batting cages, a playground and a multi-story building for concessions and restrooms.

Cregge anticipates the build-out to take about a year.

“What we would project as of right now is we would have baseball continue through Memorial Day and then shut down the park for the summer 2014 season, the fall 2014 season and the spring 2015 season,” he said.

He is working to see if space can be rented out at parks in neighboring communities in the interim.
