Since the polls in Henry County opened at 7 a.m. this morning, voter turnout has “been quite well,” Director of Elections Janet Shellnutt said.

“It’s been extremely steady so far. I didn’t expect to hear about lines forming this early but Stockbridge in particular is experiencing a lot of activity,” she said.

Shellnut said she thought voter turnout would be heavy this year because the county received many early votes.

“Stockbridge and McDonough each had about 900 early votes cast,” she said.

She said the county had about 4,500 early votes for the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or SPLOST, to fund capital and transportation projects in the community.

“A poll taken a few weeks ago showed that county residents were split about evenly on whether they wanted the tax reimposed,” Shellnut said.

There are about 121,000 active voters in the county.

“About 10 percent of voters in McDonough and over 10 percent of voters in Stockbridge have already cast their votes,” Shellnut said.

Mayoral and city council elections are being held in Hampton, McDonough and Stockbridge while council members will be elected in Locust Grove.

Shellnut said “though voting is running smoothly so far, we have had some issues with having to move and remove campaign signs that do not follow county ordinances.

She said she expects to see more lines at different precincts throughout the day.

Voting will end at 7 p.m. this afternoon.
