But now its coach Michelle Smith’s second season at the helm and expectations are higher.
“We’re not young anymore and we can’t use the excuse of this is my first year and the girls really didn’t know the system or how we wanted them to play last year,” Smith said. “But we’ve had a year and a summer to establish that. We have goals. We want to stay consistent every game.”
Star player and Cincinnati commit Brianna Moore is focused on helping the team accomplish this task.
“One goal is not to play to the level of our competition,” Moore said. “We’re trying to play to our capabilities against all teams no matter how good or bad they are.”
According to Smith, this means handling things on the court which seem small but hold a lot of weight in outcomes of games.
“We just want to make sure we are doing the little things,” Smith said. “If we can do the little things like box out and get back in transition, I think we should be in a good position every game to bring home a W.”
Luella is currently 1-1 record and will make its debut in the Morrow Thanksgiving tournament Wednesday.
“We didn’t play over Thanksgiving last year so the goal for this year is that we wanted to play a little tougher competition,” Smith said. “Hopefully, that will reflect in our play when we get to the postseason.”
