The Atlanta resident’s latest endeavor manages to marry the two worlds while promoting healthy lifestyle choices.
“My motto is to not force feed. … Some people don’t respond well to others pushing them to change,” she said. “However, when they do it on their own, it becomes a natural habit. It sticks.”
As creator, director and host of the online/made-for-TV project “Cooking with Caspino,” the radio and TV personality grants the audience access into her space while whipping up dishes tied to Southern, Caribbean, Latino, Portuguese and Italian cuisine. She is seeking a national TV station to broadcast her shows.
To promote her one-woman healthy cooking and sustainability initiative, the lively Caspino travels nationally for TV demonstrations, public appearances, classes and catering.
The Neighbor Newspapers recently caught up with Caspino to talk shop and her personal stake in getting others to embrace change.
o On the mission:
“My mission is teaching people healthy eating for disease prevention and a better quality, longer life.”
o On how she found cooking:
“I started cooking [at age] 7. I was inspired by my grandmother, who could make grass taste good. I am ethnically mixed and my inspiration for flavor comes from my Caribbean, Hispanic and Italian background.”
o On her inspiration for change:
“My daughter, who’s 25, has been diagnosed with lupus and I have taken care of my mom for 13 years since her diagnosis with Alzheimer’s. … This is my motivation for cooking healthy. And, through my background in social services working with all types of illnesses, I understand that diet does make a difference.”
o On ‘Cooking with Caspino:’
“It’s an eco-friendly educational cooking show that’s made up of several components and broken down into segments. [For example] our ‘Mind, Body and Spirit’ portion focuses on the holistic approach through exercise and meditation. … We also have special segments that educate how health, hydration and food affect your hair and nails.
“[Audience members] can incorporate healthy eating into their life without the stress of step-by-step, calculated diets and programs … I teach how it can just come naturally, as a habit. Eating healthy and taking care of your body should be a part of your daily regime — just like brushing your teeth. …”
