First the Lady Wolverines captured a clean sweep of the competition with a 64-48 victory over Ola on Nov. 26.
Treva Hickey scored 25 points and Deonna Williams and Hannah Ambrose both added nine for Union Grove, which also cruised past Locust Grove and Strong Rock Christian.
After leading by eight points at the break, the Lady Wolverines extended their margin to double digits by the end of the third quarter. Williams notched all nine of her points, including two 3-pointers, in the frame and Hickey had eight points.
Bradleigh Hooper led the Lady Mustangs with 20 points.
The Wolverines’ battle with Ola didn’t go as smoothly but they were able to jump ahead early in the third quarter and hold on from there.
Jay Shorts scored 17 points and Rod Dunlap added 13 in the 54-44 victory to conclude the tournament.
“It was a gritty performance,” Union Grove boys’ basketball coach Russ Atkins said. “We didn’t play very well like we did in our first three games but a lot of that had to do with Ola. I give Ola a lot of credit for what they were doing defensively.”
Before the tournament, Union Grove defeated Whitewater then blew out both Locust Grove and Strong Rock in the other two tournament games.
“Last year, we were fortunate enough to win this tournament too,” Atkins said. “I’m proud of them to come back here and repeat as I guess ‘tournament champions.’ It’s not easy to do no matter what tournament you are in but I use Thanksgiving and Christmas tournaments to build for the region tournament because you play back-to-back games.”
Coleman Seabolt scored 13 points and Paul Blackburn added 10 for the Mustangs, who ended the first and second quarters with buzzer beaters.
