“I think one of the most fun things about this year’s tour is that each house is completely different on the inside and on the outside,” said Patty Hull, one of the event co-chairs along with Audrey McMenamy and Honorary Chairwoman Marian Hill. “They each have the unique personalities of the owners. They’re all fascinating in their own way.”
The tour features two residences on Cherokee Road and one each on Tuxedo Road and Rilman Lake Court.
“We try to pick houses that are architecturally significant, interesting in their details and mostly homes that people haven’t seen if we can,” Hull said, “But some houses are so pretty that even if you’ve seen it once before, you don’t mind seeing it again.”
Those on the tour can start at any one of the four homes, pick up a program and visit the other homes throughout the day at their own leisure.
“I think each one is not to be missed,” Hull said.
Tour hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Proceeds benefit the club’s community fund, which supports Atlanta-area organizations focused on charitable, scientific or educational needs in the fields of horticulture and conservation. In the past, money has gone to Swan Woods at the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead, the Historic Oakland Cemetery in Grant Park and the Atlanta Botanical Garden in Midtown, Hull said.
“We have organizations submit grant requests to us each year,” she said. “Our community fund committee pulls together all of the requests and then decides what they would like to recommend … and then the entire club votes on it.” Part of the proceeds will also go to the club’s Neel Reid Scholarship Fund at the University of Georgia’s College of Environment and Design. One of the homes on the tour — 1 Cherokee Road — was designed by Reid, an early 20th century Atlanta architect.
“Anything that Neel Reid did has a special place in our hearts,” Hull said.
She said the club hopes to raise $50,000 from the home tour. The organization started the tour in 1949 and continued the tradition through the 1960s. It was revived in 2008.
