LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Teacher: students should know how to spell in sixth grade

Spelling words correctly has become a lost skill. Phonics, decoding and dictionary usage does not appear to be a prioritized skill that’s taught early and emphasized in the later grades. I grew up with teachers who took off points for not dotting the “i” or crossing the “t.” There was no special strategy or program they used with me. We just wrote and spoke.

Continue to teach your kids to take vocabulary and spelling seriously.

Personally, I feel Hollywood and professional athletes need to be fined big money for misspelled words on Twitter and Instagram. Since they have so many followers, they should be held accountable.

Right now, I do not have all the answers to help our kids have significant gains in their spelling skills, but we need to do more in the classroom to emphasize this lost skill.

Why is the student making up sounds that aren’t even a part of the syllable?

Why are there significant misspelled words on a typed document?

How do you misspell your own name, or why can’t you spell your mother’s first or last name?

Why are you still misspelling our president’s name and your teacher’s name?

Excuse my frustration. I am good now. Yesterday one of our words was focaccia (foh-kah-chuh). Quite challenging word. I felt like I was reading lyrics from an explicit gangster rap album when I saw some spellings.
