From Eagle’s Landing Christian, senior quarterback Dalton Etheridge was named Region 5-A Player of the Year. Possessing the ability to run and pass, Etheridge will attend Jacksonville State next year.
The Chargers, who fell a game short of defending their 2012 private-school title, had seven other players make the team. Senior linebacker Josh Shockley was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year along with Pace’s Denzel Franklin. Senior offensive lineman Beau Beasley was named Lineman of the Year.
Junior Ryan McNeely (offensive lineman) and seniors Davis Carrandi (wide receiver) and Lane Timpson (running back) were also voted to the offensive team. On the defensive side of the ball, senior lineman Andrew Williams, sophomore linebacker Chase Burdette and senior defensive back Bryson Durden were named to the All-Region team.
Offensive Player of the Year was split between Landmark Christian’s Stockton McGuire and Pace’s Kevin Johnson.
In Region 2-AAAAAA, Luella had two players (senior linebacker Steve Osondu and junior lineman A.J. Reeves) make First Team Defense, two voted to Second Team Defense (senior linebacker Jaylon Harris and junior LB Wendell Mitchell) and three more make Second Team Offense (senior running back Trevone Sullivan, junior lineman Darren Drake and senior kicker Giancarlo Malerba).
Reeves had 113 tackles (23 individual stops) and six sacks. Osondu, also a member of the Super 7 with Etheridge, made 88 tackles (42 stops) and 5.5 sacks.
The Lions had four Honorable Mentions (senior defensive lineman Malik Skinner, junior running back Quad Clemons, junior linebacker Sal Vazquez and sophomore defensive lineman Terry Thomas).
In Region 4-AAAAA, Caleb Ham, Lane Henderson and Bradley Sheets of Union Grove were named First Team Offense. For Ola, Tyler Wesson, Cole Bailey, Connor Schlottman and Will Smith were voted First Team Defense.
