Paulding airport leaders are considering giving the facility’s fixed-based operator a break on its rent at Silver Comet Field because of ongoing construction. Airport director Blake Swafford told the Paulding County Airport Authority last week he recommended giving Paulding Jet Center a temporary decrease in its $3,000 monthly lease payment.

“They’re being impacted by the construction,” he said. The airport on Rockmart Highway is a partial construction zone. Work is progressing to widen a taxiway, extend the runway, build a new hangar for corporate entities, and renovate the terminal building.

Sales of fuel reportedly had dropped significantly in recent months amid a decrease in daily use of the facility, including student pilots taking lessons, Swafford said.

In other reports to the authority, Jason Summerhour of the airport authority’s website committee said the site now includes airport authority meeting minutes, statements from authority leaders on recent controversies, and training materials for pilots.

The statements refer to the airport operating board's alleged lack of transparency on negotiations with a company which may bring commercial airline service to the facility.

Swafford told authority members a potential tenant has inquired about filling the new corporate hangar under construction on the airport property.

However, Swafford said he plans to release a request for proposals in January to garner interest in the new building, which will include a 25,000-square-foot hangar and 11,000-square-foot office space.

He said he hopes to receive all proposals by February, which would allow potential tenants to move in by the anticipated April completion.
