The Paulding County girls’ basketball team had one of its best campaigns in program history last season, winning 20 contests and making an appearance in the Class 5A playoffs. The Patriots are off to another fine start this season, winning seven of their first 10 games overall, including three region victories. The catalyst for the charge has been senior Keisha Shy.

She has averaged a team-high 23.6 points per contest, which is the third-most in the state. She has scored 20 or more points in five contests, including a season-high 35 points in Paulding County’s 75-46 win over Villa Rica on Nov. 25. She posted 29 points against Lithia Springs in a 73-53 victory on Dec. 16.

“Keisha has played well for us and continues to get better,” head coach Byron Scott said. Shy’s production has helped lead a Patriots’ offense that’s averaging a region-high 58 points per contest.

Shy, who also grabs a team-high 2.6 steals per contest along with four rebounds, has been part of a program turnaround that saw Paulding County have losing records during her first two seasons on the varsity squad. “We’re working together and no one is trying to be selfish,” Shy said. “Our coaching staff has gotten us to this point and we’ve begun to not have a losers’ mentality as a team.”

The Patriots return to action on Jan. 3 against East Paulding.
