Registration upcoming for Dr. Seuss, firefighter, cake-baking events

Paulding County Parks and Recreation will be registering in February for the following March events:

- Dr. Seuss’s Birthday Party is set for March 1 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Paulding Senior Center banquet room for ages 18 months to 5 years. Registration is Feb. 3 through 21. Fee is $8.

March 2 is Read Across America Day. This event offers a great opportunity to introduce the joy of reading to young children. Celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday and enjoy story time with The Cat in the Hat. Parents will participate with the children while they listen to selections from classic Dr. Seuss stories, play games, enjoy a birthday snack, and receive a special reading gift.

- I want to Be a Firefighter is set for March 15, 1 to 2:30 p.m., at Burnt Hickory Park for ages 3 to 6. Registration is Feb. 3 to March 7. The fee is $8.

Has your child ever wondered, “What’s it like to be a firefighter?” In this one-day event, children ages 3 to 6 years will get firsthand experience on being a firefighter. Children will learn fire safety rules, get to explore a fire truck, and tour the firehouse. The program will end with punch and cookies with the firemen.

- Family Fun Flyers is set for March 8, with sign-in at 12:30 p.m. and start at 1 p.m. at White Oak Park for all ages. It is free.

Families are invited to come fly a kite on this windy Saturday afternoon and take part in the annual Family Fun Flyers. Prizes will be awarded to the oldest flyer, youngest flyer who can fly their own kite, most unique kite and highest flyer. Make sure to bring a picnic and enjoy the park. Participants must furnish their own kite.

- “Cake is Art” Cake Decorating Challenge, co-sponsored by Kake Kompani, is set for March 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Burnt Hickory Park for ages 10 and up. Registration will be Feb. 3 to March 14. Cost is $20 per cake entry, $30 for two cake entries, $35 for three cake entries.

This challenge is a great way for local bakers and cake designers to show off their talents! Overall awards will include Best of Show, Most Original, Best Taste and People’s Choice voted by the public. First place trophy and second and third place ribbons will be given in each category. Categories are Youth Cake/Cupcake; Adult Cake/Cupcake; and Faux Cake. Specific competitor rules and guidelines will be given at pre-registration.
