Freshman Greg James was supposed to come in and give Mount Vernon Presbyterian a scoring boost as the season began.

While James has certainly provided some scoring lately after a slow start, the 6-foot-2 guard has surprisingly also been a force on the boards and defensively for the Mustangs.

James has stepped up his level of play, averaging about 15 points and eight rebounds a contest in the last five games — including a season-high 21 points in a 60-44 victory over Decatur Jan. 3.

With his potent combination of scoring and rebounding, James has played a big role in the Mustangs’ 14-1 start.

While he was certainly expected to score, James’ rebounding ability has been a pleasant surprise for Mount Vernon coach Curtis Berry.

“Greg came into the school with pretty much the reputation as a scorer and he struggled — it was quite an adjustment from middle school to varsity basketball and especially in Region 5A,” Berry said. “But he’s kind of remade himself as a kid who’s pretty tough. He’ll rebound and he’ll defend. It’s quite a notion for a kid to come in with the reputation as a shooter and turn himself into a rebounder and defender.”
