Residents and visitors in Decatur who are looking to keep their New Year’s resolution of eating healthier can participate in the Eat Well Indie-catur campaign through February.

The city’s Active Living program and visitor’s center has teamed up with local restaurants, such as Cakes & Ale, Parker’s on Ponce and No. 246, in order to provide a fun way to enjoy fresh food.

“Anyone can visit a participating restaurant any day during February, choose one of their featured healthy entrees and get an Eat Well Indie-catur card signed,” said Cheryl Burnette, assistant director of the city’s Active Living program. “Cards will be available at participating locations and in the visitor’s center at 113 Clairemont Ave.”

Once participants receive three signatures during the month, they will earn a recipe book featuring some of the city’s restaurants’ healthiest recipes compiled by local chefs.

Sally Brozek, nutritionist and active living committee member, said the campaign is the continuation of an event that first began last year.

“The first time we tried this was in October of last year, but there were several other competing dine-out events in the city, so it didn’t get the attention we had hoped overall,” she said. “We surveyed restaurants on what worked and what didn’t and decided to tweak the program this go-around. For example, we decided to offer it the entire month in February instead of just Tuesdays as we did last year.”

Brozek said the campaign is a good way to highlight the city’s popular and growing restaurant scene while encouraging healthy eating habits.

“The committee was looking for ways to bring attention to healthy eating and good nutrition in a far reaching way and we wanted to include everyone from singles to families and children to seniors,” she said. “We also wanted to take advantage of Decatur’s restaurant scene because we’re proud of its popularity, vibrancy and the fact that many travel from outside of the city to eat in our restaurants.”
