After a difficult stretch during the middle of its season, the Lithia Springs’ girls basketball team has won four of its last five contests heading into the Region 5-AAAAA tournament this week. Senior guard Dannyel Richardson has been the major catalyst for the Lions’ revival, posting her best game of the season against South Cobb on Jan. 25 when she scored 19 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and seven steals in Lithia Springs’ 63-25 victory.

“We’ve come a long way from the beginning of the season when we were learning how to play with each other,” Richardson said. “I tell my younger teammates that as long as we keep playing like this, we’ll be OK.”

The guard has seen her role change on the Lions’ squad this season but has still averaged more than six points and five rebounds per contest, both the second-highest mark for the team. “This season, I’ve had to handle the ball more which wasn’t one of my strong points,” Richardson stated. “It was difficult but I’ve gotten better throughout the season.”

Richardson has been a member of HOSA, an organization for future health professionals, while in school and served as an athletic trainer for the football team while also playing on the soccer team. She plans to major in biology upon entering college and pursue a career as an anesthesiologist.
