The series of more than 230 events at nearly 100 locations will include tours of more than a dozen local landmarks. In Buckhead the event will include tours of the BeltLine, the Atlanta History Center’s Cherokee Garden Library and Kenan Research Center, the Goodrum House, Ahavath Achim Synagogue, Sardis United Methodist Church and the Cathedral of St. Philip.
Just south of Buckhead there will be tours of Ansley Park plus Midtown’s Piedmont Park, Rhodes Hall, the William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum’s “Return to Rich’s” exhibit, Ivy Hall, the Margaret Mitchell House, Peachtree Christian Church, The Temple, the Piedmont Driving Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution building.
Phoenix Flies will also make tour stops at White Provision in the Westside community and at Oglethorpe University, including its Museum of Art, in Brookhaven. Though there are no tour sites in Sandy Springs or Vinings, there will be open houses for Log Cabin Community Church in nearby Smyrna.
There also will be special, themed tours of multiple sites, including some for children 10 and older.
“You will have a chance to visit the APC’s headquarters which date to 1854 to 56, and we have a city filled with historic treasures which represent more than 150 years of Atlanta’s culture and achievement,” Boyd Coons, the center’s executive director, said in a statement. “We believe this is what gives Atlanta a unique sense of place and a richer daily experience, and it is for this purpose that our mission of preserving and protecting Atlanta’s historic and culturally significant buildings, neighborhoods and landscapes is pursued.
“To this end we rely on our preservation partners — all those who value Atlanta’s history and share the rewards of that pursuit with everyone who experiences the city. We are celebrating the efforts of over 80 of these partners in this year’s Phoenix Flies.”
Atlanta’s historic built environment of buildings, landscapes and neighborhoods is an integral part of the city’s culture and economy. The tour provides an opportunity to learn about, celebrate and strengthen these assets to the benefit of all.
Events are subject to change or cancellation without notice. All events are attended at the risk of the attendee. Some events require reservations which are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Please follow event listing instructions.
