Mark and Claire Murray, who in 2009 moved to the Chastain Park neighborhood near the school, earlier filed a complaint about the fields, requesting the organizations using them be required to file a special-use permit when leasing them from Atlanta Public Schools. In addition to Sutton, the Northside Youth Organization and Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, both in Buckhead, use the fields for their athletic teams. The appeal hearing was set for Thursday but was cancelled when the appeal was withdrawn, Jim King, president of the Chastain Park Civic Association, a neighborhood group, said in a text message.
King also said Mark Murray resigned as an association board member, and King accepted it on behalf of the board.
E. Rivers Elementary School is currently using Sutton’s campus while its campus is being rebuilt. Sutton students will move back into their old campus in January, when the new Rivers facilities open.
An online petition (chn.ge/1fNmMFo) lobbying the Atlanta City Council to “Let the Children Play” on the school district’s fields had 3,509 signatures as of Saturday at 1:15 p.m.
A message left at the Murrays’ home Saturday seeking comment on the issue was not immediately returned.
