Participants are encouraged to dress-up their pets in order to win prizes.
“There are six different prize categories including best all-around dog, owner and pet look-alike, best costume, best personality, best team spirit, and most talented,” Main Street Manager Mallory Rich said.
The judges of each category will be Mayor Robert Price and his wife, Barbara Price.
Prizes will be awarded from Tanger Outlet Shopping Center as well as local businesses Zebra House and Paws & Claws.
A raffle for a luxury dog bed will also be sponsored by Piorra Mattress.
The city first hosted a Mardi Growl event in 2010 because, Rich said, “The Downtown Development Authority wanted to start hosting an event for the community each year and felt that this would be a fun, unique celebration to bring people into the historic downtown.”
Downtown Development Authority member Aggie Combs said the fun and creativity have kept it going.
“I love to see how creative the dog owners are with the costumes that they design for their pets and even for themselves,” she said. “It is exciting to see all of the parade participants marching down the sidewalks in downtown Locust Grove. I was able to march in the parade the first two years, and I had a blast. For the past two years, I have been working at the registration tables and helping vendors set up.”
Authority members said they hope this year’s celebration will be the biggest one yet and expose more residents to the downtown area.
“People who attend can expect to see lots of pups, food vendors, and unique costumes,” Rich said. “This is a fun way for people to get out, see what’s going on in their community, and celebrate Mardi Gras and their dogs.”

The first 50 registered dogs will receive a goodie bag filled with treats, toys, a bandana and more.
