Authorities said Wednesday that 42-year-old Gregorio Eduardo Barrera pleaded guilty to theft by taking and violating the oath of public office. Barrera once worked as a Roswell Municipal Court marshal and stole proceeds from traffic fines over the course of two years.
Officials say the theft came to light when Barrera was on administrative leave in early 2009. Someone told authorities they were falsely arrested for a traffic citation that they already paid. The complainant showed a receipt as proof of payment and city officials discovered that Barerra was pocketing the fines and making it look like they had never been paid in the city's computer system.
