Sandy Springs resident Marty Alterman said when she suggested an idea to her seamstress for new running attire, she never thought that would be the start of a women’s clothing business.

“It was for me personally, because after a certain age I couldn’t find anything to jog around Chastain Park in,” she said.

Alterman and seamstress Emily Mak, a Brookhaven resident who runs Shanghai Alterations in Sandy Springs, launched their line — Jane Darling by ME — in April 2008.

The clothing line was named after Alterman’s best friend, Jane Lefco, who died unexpectedly of a torn aorta in 2008 and saw the company’s first sample the day before she died. Lefco’s maiden name was Darling. The “ME” in the company’s name stands for the initials of the owners’ first names.

Alterman and Mak started off just making what they’ve coined “Legginskirts,” which are variations of skirts attached to leggings. Though they were originally made for exercising, Alterman said women started wearing them with heels and designer tops for casual or dressy wear.

“They just made them feel attractive wearing this piece,” she said.

The fabric is a four-way stretch spandex material, and the designs help hide women’s problem areas while accentuating their assets, Alterman said.

Mak said about four years ago, they expanded the line to include tops, jackets and dresses.

“Sometimes we look at magazines or fashion shows [to come up with new designs],” she said.

Mak said they develop a direction they want to go in and then add input from what the customers need or want in an item.

Alterman said what makes the clothing items unique is they are comfortable, don’t require ironing and take up little space in luggage. She said customers are typically introduced to the business via word of mouth.

Customers can find the clothing line at Shanghai Alterations, 222-A Johnson Ferry Road, where all the pieces are manufactured, and at Fragile Gifts, 6010 Sandy Springs Circle in Sandy Springs. Prices range from $65 to $300.

Mak said her dream for the company is for women everywhere to start wearing Legginskirts as frequently as they wear jeans.

“We really want the whole world to wear Legginskirts,” she said.
