This Saturday marks opening day for the Heritage Sandy Springs Famers Market, which will be held at the former Target store location at 235 Sandy Springs Circle. The market, in its fifth season, is under the new management of Heritage Sandy Springs, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and promoting the historic and cultural identity of the city.
“One of the founders, Andy Bauman, he’s now a city councilman for Sandy Springs, and he just thought sustaining the market as an individual was difficult to keep going as it grew,” said Manager Lori Coombs. “He really wanted to put it under an umbrella of a true not-for-profit, 501c3 [organization] like Heritage, and it was a perfect fit.”
The market will be open Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon through November. About 50 vendors will gather each week.
Coombs said some new vendors this year include Heritage Farm, Simply Seoul Kitchen and Cibo e Beve.
The market also features artisan vendors and live music. Juliana Finch will perform opening day, Coombs said.
Likely opening toward the end of April, though the official date had not been finalized as of April 1, is the Old Five Points Drive-Thru Famers Market, which will be held Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m. at 2140 Johnson Ferry Road in Brookhaven.
The market, which will be in its third year, features about 10 vendors weekly offering produce, prepared food and artisan goods, said Manager Eugenie Viener. Patrons have the option of parking and browsing through on foot or utilizing the unique drive-through option, she said.
“You can walk through or drive through, but our speed limit is 2 miles per hour,” Viener said. “If you know what you want to pick up, it’s very quick [to use the drive-through service].”
In addition to serving the local community with fresh food options, the market donates the vendor fees it collects to Peace Containers, a charity that re-purposes shipping containers into sustainable and affordable buildings and homes for communities in need in Jamaica, she said. Viener said in the past two years, the market has donated $12,000 for the charity.
Already in operation for the season are the Peachtree Road and Brookhaven farmers markets.
The Peachtree Road market opened its eighth season this past Saturday at the parking lot of the Cathedral of St. Philip at 2744 Peachtree Road in Buckhead.
The market will run every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon, rain or shine, through Dec. 13, said Manager Lauren Carey. She said about 50 vendors will be out each week offering produce, cheese, meats, flowers, prepared foods and more.
“New this year, we will welcome Verdant Kitchen, which is growing organic ginger and turmeric down in south Georgia and using that to make their own ginger ale, ginger syrup, ginger honey and ginger snaps,” Carey said. “We’ll also have Earth Biscuit Foods, which has hand-cut crackers made from spent grain from Monday Night Brewing. [Also new is] Garnish and Gather. They gather all the ingredients you need to make a delicious meal at home, and they feature a lot of our farmers.”
The market also includes live music, children’s activities, gardening tips and chefs demonstrations.
The Brookhaven market started its third season March 29. It meets Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon behind Brookhaven Baptist Church at 1294 N. Druid Hills Road in Brookhaven.
More than 30 vendors, many local to Brookhaven, will offer fresh or home-prepared foods. Many products will be gluten free, vegetarian or vegan.
