The parents of band members have organized a golf tournament fundraiser May 12 at The Manor Golf and Country Club in Milton, said band director Ryan Borger.
“We have a wonderful parent volunteer committee that’s structuring some fundraisers for our students to get involved with and some that just the parents are organizing,” he said.
Borger said the overall goal is to raise between $100,000 to $150,000.
“That will certainly not cover everybody’s expense but it makes it much more manageable for everybody that wanted to go to be able to say they could travel with us,” he said. “We’re trying to have the students generate up to $50,000 of that goal and the parents are trying to match that or to double it and reach $100,000-plus.”
Students are still required to individually cover a portion of their own trip fees, and student fundraising has already begun. Borger said students sold coupon cards in the fall and will be doing so again at the start of the new school year.
The golf fundraiser — dubbed the Share the Dream Golf Classic — is the band parents’ first major fundraiser, he said. The cost is $250 per golfer or $1,000 for a foursome. Various levels of sponsorships are also available.
The tournament starts at 10 a.m. and will also include an awards dinner at 3 p.m.
“All of the proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the students traveling to London and to help get the marching band to London for the New Year’s Day parade,” Borger said. “None of it goes to any operating expenses or the band [in general] or for the performing arts department or anything else.”
He said the chance to participate in such a prestigious parade is an honor for the band.
“What a great way to establish an expectation for the future of the band program and the school in general,” Borger said.
Marching band students were surprised with the invitation to join the parade in September, he said, just after one full year of the band program’s existence.
