Nelson Douglas provided a spark for Westminster in its first-round Class AA state baseball playoff series with Oglethorpe County two weeks ago.

The senior shortstop/pitcher swung a hot bat in the two-game sweep, going 5-for-7 with five RBIs and three doubles to help lead the Wildcats to an 11-1 victory in the opening game May 2 and a 14-5 win in the second and clinching contest May 3.

He went on to go 4-for-6 with an RBI in Westminster’s 2-0 series win over Coosa last Wednesday.

Through the first two rounds of the postseason, Douglas is 9-for-13 with six RBIs.

Douglas has been a steady presence in the Westminster batting order with a .329 batting average, two home runs and 19 RBIs.

He also has made an important contribution in the Wildcat pitching staff as the closer, compiling a 2-1 record with a 1.17 earned run average and 17 strikeouts – giving up only four walks in the process – in 12 innings pitched.

“Nelson is a very good pitcher and is a fantastic leader for us,” Westminster coach Russell Wrenn said. “He’s the most vocal leader in the infield that I’ve ever coached. He does a great job with the guys in the infield and the team on the bench and kind of embodies the team-first attitude that we try to instill.”
