In celebration of National Ice Cream Day, the Vinings Historic Preservation Society will hold its annual ice cream social Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Old Pavilion on Paces Mill Road.

“This is our annual gift to our members and to the Vinings community,” said Gillian Greer, the society’s executive director.

Attendees can cool down on the summer day with ice cream provided by Cold Stone Creamery.

“They bring two or three flavors usually, and then they bring a toppings bar,” Greer said.

She said Vinings resident Dean Morris will supplement the toppings with his homemade hot fudge, which is a secret family recipe.

“I am so pleased to continue Cold Stone’s support of this very popular community event,” Blake Rogers, owner of the Cold Stone Vinings location, said in a statement. “We look forward to a day of ice cream and family fun with all our Vinings neighbors.”

In addition to the ice cream, there will be popcorn provided by the Rotary Club of Vinings and cookies provided by Fidelity Bank. The event offers family friendly entertainment as well.

“Vinings Fire Station No. 5 will bring one of their fire engines over,” Greer said. “Of course, the kids love climbing all over that, [and] they get their pictures taken. St. Angelo’s Pizza always brings their renowned face painter and she decorates all the kids’ faces. That’s always a popular part of the event.”

Sentimental Journey, an Atlanta-based barbershop quartet, will perform for the crowd at 2 p.m. There will also be classic cars on display.

Free parking will be across the street at the Piedmont medical facility.

Greer said in addition to serving as a community celebration, the social allows guests who are not society members a chance to join.

“In the society, we probably have about 400 actual members, and we’re always looking for more,” she said.

The organization’s mission includes preserving the historic structures and spirit of Vinings and educating the public about local history.
