The Hub, an extended-stay hotel located at 6096 Barfield Road and being used for student housing by the Art Institute of Atlanta in Sandy Springs, faces multiple violations following annual inspections by the Sandy Springs Fire Rescue and Code Enforcement departments. The institute leases 15 of The Hub’s 16 buildings for use as student housing.

Officials conducted their initial investigation of The Hub complex May 9, giving property management until July 25 to make needed corrections. The scheduled follow-up inspection was delayed due to a fatal shooting at the facility. An institute student is wanted in connection with the shooting. The follow-up inspection for the facility was held Wednesday and numerous violations were found throughout the complex.

The Hub was issued notice of citations for the following fire code violations:

o Smoke detectors not working or missing

o Singular portable fire extinguisher out of date

o Fireplaces within the units not sealed

o No paperwork to indicate a fire hydrant inspection

o Locked dead bolted exit door for egress to exterior from lobby area

In addition, code enforcement cited The Hub for the following violations:

o Accumulated trash

o Three inoperable vehicles with expired tags on site

o Illicit discharge of paint into the storm drain and a lack of maintenance on the storm drains, with trash and stagnant water present

o Loose handrails

o Unauthorized dilapidated fence

An Aug. 15 court date has been set in Sandy Springs Municipal Court to address the charges. Fire rescue will re-inspect The Hub Thursday to determine if corrections have been made to ensure smoke detectors are present and in working order.
