Being the first softball coach at Hampton High is a new challenge for Michelle Huffman but not a new process. Back in 2003 when Gray’s Creek High in North Carolina opened its doors, Huffman was also the first softball coach.

“I had to build a program brand-new just like I am doing now, so I’m excited,” Huffman said. “I know very few people who get to build two programs from the ground up, so it’s kind of nice.”

With another chance to do things better than she did at Gray’s Creek, Huffman said she will focus more on the players.

“Sometimes being in a brand new program you think everything has to get done right now,” Huffman said. “But the biggest thing right now is the girls. Do I have everything to play a game right now? Great. Now let me focus on the girls. When I first started at the other school, I was so worried do we have this? Do we have that? Is my field ready? Then I worried about the girls.”

As far as the softball team, the Lady Hornets’ roster will be comprised of only freshmen, sophomores and juniors.

“Our goal is one day to have three softball teams but we’re not at that point right now,” Huffman said. “You have to do what you can with the numbers that you have. We’re going to make the best of it. My freshmen are giving my juniors a run for their money, so we’re excited about that.”

Huffman also talked about how focused this group has been.

“These girls are workers and I love it,” Huffman said. “Give me 100 workers because we will overcome so many things. They will run through a wall if I ask them to. I have not seen as many hard workers in a long time.

“They don’t complain. They just soak it all up and keep on going. I told them as long as you keep giving me that type of attitude and work ethic that we’re going to do some things to surprise some people.”
