Even though Dutchtown finished below the .500 mark last season for the first time since 2007, new head coach Mark Myers believes his team is not far from turning things around.

“I felt like this wasn’t a rebuilding job,” Myers said. “I felt like the foundation was already a good foundation and I just needed to build on that foundation.”

While Dutchtown compiled a 4-6 overall record but an 0-4 mark in Region 4-AAAA under newly hired Kevin Jones, Myers was the offensive coordinator at Henry County.

“I want to change the culture around here,” Myers said. “I felt like coming in there wasn’t much leadership. I felt like the talent was always here at that school even when I was coaching against them but it was just something missing. We got to get back to the roots of things when they were winning.”

Outside of Myers being the new coach, everything else should be familiar to the Bulldogs, especially in the region, since realignment and moving up in classification didn’t change their schedule too much.

“I really don’t feel like going up a classification is going to affect us as much,” Myers said. “We’ll have to see how things stack up for us against the other regions. Inside the region, it’s been the same schools we have been playing against forever. Our region is pretty much a Henry County region on our side.”

Even though school record holders Brandon Robertson and Rodel Shorter have graduated, opponents will have to deal with junior quarterback K’Lin Epps and senior running back Malik Barkley.

“We are just trying to fill a lot of holes on the offensive side of the ball,” said Myers, who has seven starters coming back on offense but just Epps and Barkley on offense. “I feel like those two guys are probably going to be the best tandem of running back and quarterback in the county.”

Epps threw for 1,234 yards and 13 touchdowns and Barkley ran for seven touchdowns.

“Malik is not very vocal but he is a leader by just doing the things he is asked to do,” Myers said. “I think he’s going to have a big senior season.”
